Functional Description:

These boats are classed as classic boats with a design from bygone eras.  Classic design boats can be manufactured from wood or composite materials.

Wood is the traditional boat building material that was and is still used for hull and spar construction.  It is buoyant, widely available and easily worked.  It is not very abrasion resistant and it can deteriorate if fresh water or marine organisms are allowed to penetrate the wood.  The hull of a wooden boat usually consists of planking fastened to frames and a keel.  Keel and frames are traditionally made of hardwoods while planking can be hardwood or softwood.  Glue, screws, rivets and/or nails are used to join the wooden components.

Classic design boats can also be built with composite materials such as fibreglass, kevlar, dynel, carbon fibres, polyethylene, epoxy and gelcoat.  Although classic boats built with composite materials are not traditional wood construction, their design is meant to emulate the wooden classic’s of bygone eras.
