Functional Description:

There is a wide variety of electric motor technologies available.  These are field-wound DC motors, permanent magnet DC motors and AC motors or permanent magnet brushless motors.  These electric motors may be inboard or outboard motors.

There are several types of batteries available for electric motors.  These are lead acid batteries, sealed lead acid batteries, nickel metal hydride, lithium ion and fuel cells.  The size of the batteries determines the speed and distance that the electric boat can travel with a full charge.

There are several methods used in charging the batteries in an electric motor.  These are shore power stations, solar panels, towed generators and wind turbines.  If the electric boat is a hybrid with an internal combustion engine as well as an electric motor, its alternator can be used to charge the batteries while this engine is running.  A regulator ensures that the batteries are charged to the maximum charge without over charging.
