Sailboats & Sailing Yachts Sub Categories: Cruising Yachts (<50') | Day Sailers | Luxury YachtsFunctional Description: A sailboat is a boat propelled partly or entirely by sails. There are a variety of types of sailboats such as a sloop, ketch, yawl, schooner, cutter, catboat and dinghy. There are also large sailing yachts and sports cruisers. Sailboats can be categorized by purpose (sport, racing, cruising), size, hull configuration (monohull, catamaran, trimaran), configuration of masts and sails and keel type (full, fin, wing, centerboard etc.). Yachts and sports cruisers are large sailboats that have accommodations for passengers and crew. Sailing yachts will have berths, heads, and a galley. Sailing yachts will also have gasoline or diesel inboard engines for sailing under power, emergencies and docking. The sloop, which features one mast, a normal mainsail and a jib sail, is the most common sailboat. This configuration is very efficient for sailing towards the wind. A ketch is similar to a sloop, except it has a second mast (mizzen mast) to the stern of the mainmast forward of the rudder post. A yawl is similar to a ketch, but the mizzen mast is behind the rudder post. A schooner can have two or more masts, distinguishing this sailboat from a ketch or a yawl. The cutter has a single mast and mainsail with the mast further aft to allow for the use of two head sails attached to two fore stays which carry the jib and stay sail respectively. A catboat has a single mast mounted forward and does not have a jib sail. Most catboats have only one sail, the mainsail. A dinghy is a type of small sailboat. The term can also refer to small racing yachts or recreational open sailing boats. They are most common in youth. A dinghy can have three (or fewer) sails (mainsail, jib, and spinnaker).
